The Promised Land

A landmark series documenting the Great Black Migration, narrated by Morgan Freeman.

The emmy-winning series tells the story of African Americans who migrated from the Deep South to Northern cities between the 1930s and 1970s, reshaping communities and culture across the United States. Through the voices, music, and personal recollections of those who lived it, the series captures moments of both hardship and hope, offering a vivid record of resilience and the search for opportunity.

The migrants themselves describe life as sharecroppers, their journeys north, and the challenges of building new lives in Chicago, one of the most segregated cities in the country. The series combines unseen archival footage, rare photographs, newsreel material, and first-hand testimony, alongside a carefully composed score, to present a historically significant record of this transformative period.
