Inside The Commons

A revealing portrait of British political life at a pivotal moment in Westminster.
Presented by veteran political journalist Michael Cockerell, this four-part documentary series offered unprecedented access to the inner workings of the House of Commons and the historic Palace of Westminster.
Filmed during the run-up to one of the most unpredictable general elections in recent British history, the series captured the daily pressures, rivalries and responsibilities faced by ministers and MPs as they navigated the machinery of Parliament, fought for their constituents and sought to shape new legislation.
With cameras granted rare access — including filming on the floor of the Commons itself — the series revealed the intensity of parliamentary life from a perspective seldom seen by the public. The weekly clashes of Prime Minister’s Questions were shown at close quarters, where the atmosphere inside the chamber proved far louder and more raucous than the distant broadcast view familiar to television audiences.
Beyond the political drama, Inside the Commons also explored the hidden workforce responsible for maintaining one of the world’s most recognisable political buildings. From the keeper of Big Ben to the staff preserving its historic stonework and running the Members’ tea rooms, the series highlighted the people who keep Parliament functioning every day.

“Michael Cockerell’s latest political documentary could enthuse those disinterested in politics.”
