The Coronation

Queen Elizabeth II reflects on her coronation in a landmark television event, now a lasting historical record.

Marking the 65th anniversary of her coronation, The Coronation captures the Queen’s first on-camera reflections on the ceremony of 2 June 1953, as well as the coronation of her father, King George VI, in 1937. This unprecedented access offers a rare personal perspective on a global event watched by millions.

The film explores the ancient coronation ceremony and the Crown Jewels, including St Edward’s Crown, which has only been worn by the Queen once, during her own crowning. Using high-definition technology, the series reveals the astonishing craftsmanship of the royal regalia and uncovers remarkable stories, giving audiences a rare opportunity to see these historic objects ip close. The film also uncovers remarkable unheard stories, such as how some jewels were hidden in a biscuit tin under Windsor Castle during World War Two.

Eyewitness accounts from those present at the Abbey, including the maid of honour who nearly fainted, combine with the Queen’s reflections to give a unique and historically significant perspective on the ceremony.

The series aired on BBC One, Smithsonian Channel, and ABC Television, and has since been distributed to over 70 territories worldwide, bringing this historic event to audiences around the globe.
